Quintaphones
Quintaphones are sets of words with a special property: you can take one of the vowels in the word and replace it with each of the other vowels, and the result will also be a word. It's most easily shown by example: bag, beg, big, bog, bug. Using good computer science notation, we can use the asterisk (*) to denote the wild card, which is the slot where the letters can be placed. So in the above example, we could just say 'b*g' to denote the series. I spent a couple of years on and off searching for as many of these as possible, before eventually turning to a python script and a dictionary file to systematically find all of them. As a final note, the word 'quintaphone' comes from a blend of 'quint' for all five vowels, and phone for 'sound.' Which of course makes no sense, because this is about spelling. However, the word quintaphone has all five vowels in it, each one appearing once, so I couldn't bring myself to call them anything else.
